Good news! I’m going to walk you through step-by-step how to get an email with a custom domain setup and running to use with Gmail.

There’s several email providers you can choose but the most common is Gmail. So, we’ll be setting up the email to work within Gmail.

I’ll include some frequently asked questions at the end to help as well.

It’s actually not too difficult, so let’s get started!

How To Get an Email With A Custom Domain: Why Is Using Gmail Important?

Here are four reasons why using Gmail is important for setting up a custom domain email for your business or website:

The majority of people use Gmail as their email service provider. G Suite is what google offers to be able to setup your email with a custom domain.
You’re likely familiar with Google apps, which Google gives you access to their full suite of apps (hence, G Suite).
You can view your emails for your business in the same manner as your personal email – directly from within Gmail.
G Suite support is AMAZING. No seriously, setting up email can be tricky for a domain (which is why you’re here I presume). The good news is that G Suite always answers promptly and has solved my issues with incredible speed!

5 Steps On How To Get An Email With A Custom Domain

1. Head to either GoDaddy or Namecheap and purchase your domain.

2. Go to the Google Apps site to get G Suite.

3. Click on the “Get Started” button for the plan of your choice and enter the info for your business.

4. Verify your domain name.

The easiest way I found to do this is by choosing to insert an HTML tag into your site’s home page. You can do this by downloading the Headers and Footers WordPress plugin, then go ahead and copy and paste the code into the header.

Click “Verify” to get your domain verified!

5. Log in to your Google Workspace account.

Click on “Users” and you should have a user listed there. You can then simply edit the info or add however many more users you need!

I’ve been using ActiveCampaign for quite a long time and found its user interface to be very easy to get used to and figure out how to use. Being able to tag contacts, create lists, and create complex email automation sequences means that you can write your emails once and follow-up with your leads on autopilot.

If you’ve got a website, then ActiveCampaign is also really great because it can track specific actions that your subscribers take on your website whether that be visiting the page or clicking a link.

There are tons of additional features as well when you get a higher tier plan, such as lead scoring and SMS messaging all inside ActiveCampaign. This makes it super easy to integrate SMS messaging with your list since everything is together in one place.

The feature I most often use is to view reports. When clicking on view reports, it allows you to see exactly how many opens of the email you received, link clicks, and the specific time a contact opened an email or clicked a link.
Next-level Automations – The automations tab is where the magic happens! What I really like is the fact that you can label specific automations to categorize everything which will help tremendously in the long run as you build out more and more automations. The most important thing you can do with automations is segmenting.
Conversations – Conversations are another unique feature that ActiveCampaign provides. It allows you to incorporate a live chat widget directly on your own website and integrate it with your email automations.
Lists – The lists in ActiveCampaign is another commonly used feature. What I personally do and recommend, is to only create a few lists and segment contacts primarily based upon applying various tags inside your email automations. For instance, I have one main list and a few other lists for those who have purchased specific products. Everything else is based upon my tags.
Forms – In order to add contacts to your autoresponder, you need to create the opt-in forms. What’s nice is that the forms creation process is actually fairly straightforward.

One of the cool parts about GetResponse that other email autoresponder software don’t have is the ability to create landing pages, sales funnel automations, webinars, and sell e-products all using the same software.

Certainly, GetResponse is advantageous if you’re wanting to use all of those additional features. Just keep in mind that if you want to create more than a few sales funnel automations or host a large webinar with more than a few hundred attendees, then you’ll need to either upgrade to a more expensive plan or purchase stand-a-lone software.

The email automation capabilities of GetResponse are good but unfortunately can’t be taken full advantage of unless you get one of the more expensive plans. In other words, you can only create custom automations if you’re on the Professional plan otherwise you’re limited to using automation templates.

As I mentioned before, if you get the Basic plan of GetResponse then you only will be able to use the automation templates. This means you can’t add to or customize the workflow of the automations. When I was playing around and testing the software, I found the templates to be limiting and you would need to likely get the Plus plan to do what you need to do.
Analytics & Reports – The reports inside GetResponse are actually on the same level if not better than ActiveCampaign which has excellent reports already. The feature that you’re likely to use the most is the email comparison tool. You can easily select two emails and compare the open-rate, click-through-rate (CTR), unsubscribe rate, bounce rate, and more.
List Management – Like any good list management tool, GetResponse allows you to sort contacts by subscription date, by date when a contact is highly engaged, and any other contact details.
Sales Funnel Automations – Create a sales funnel automation sequence of emails with e-commerce shop integration, automatically recommend products, and abandoned cart emails.
Landing Pages – Create landing pages using GetResponse that include popup forms and countdown timers.

I’ve been using ActiveCampaign for quite a long time and found its user interface to be very easy to get used to and figure out how to use. Being able to tag contacts, create lists, and create complex email automation sequences means that you can write your emails once and follow-up with your leads on autopilot.

Dashboard – What’s nice about ActiveCampaign is that there’s the main dashboard where everything is laid out in an easy-to-follow manner. You can quickly view things like the recent activity of contacts, interaction rate, active contacts, and view top contacts among other things.

The most useful thing I’ve found is that you can use the drop-down filters to sort by tag name, list, or status. You can even search for the name of a specific contact.
Campaigns – Campaigns in ActiveCampaign are essentially email blasts that you can send out as one-time emails or a series of emails. The campaigns are also laid out nicely in a table format. The feature I most often use is to view reports. When clicking on view reports, it allows you to see exactly how many opens of the email you received, link clicks, and the specific time a contact opened an email or clicked a link.
Next-level Automations – The automations tab is where the magic happens! What I really like is the fact that you can label specific automations to categorize everything which will help tremendously in the long run as you build out more and more automations. The most important thing you can do with automations is segmenting.
Conversations – Conversations are another unique feature that ActiveCampaign provides. It allows you to incorporate a live chat widget directly on your own website and integrate it with your email automations.
Lists – The lists in ActiveCampaign is another commonly used feature. What I personally do and recommend, is to only create a few lists and segment contacts primarily based upon applying various tags inside your email automations. There’s no doubt that email marketing can be tricky at times. Figuring out what the best time of day to send a marketing email to your list is one of the pieces to the puzzle that needs to be solved.

The good news is that I’ve researched and pulled together the data from various email marketing companies in this one post.

Here’s all the resources of data compiled:

Let’s dive in now and take a look at when to send your marketing emails.

**What Is The Best Day To Send Emails?**

Spoiler Alert: The best day to send varies and can only be found by testing with your own email list.

But let’s take a look at the data out there to see of we can get a good idea of what might be the best day to send out an email marketing campaign.

First up, a 2013 study by GetResponse reveals the best day to send emails based upon the CTR or click-through rate.

Here’s the infographic that came about after pulling all the data together.

When evaluating the best day upon CTR, you can see from GetResponse’s data above that the best day to send marketing emails is Tuesday with an average of 19.9% open rate and 4.55% CTR.

The second best day would be Friday with a 19.6% open rate and a 4.9% CTR.

The key takeaway…

The weekend email marketing results can be seen as significantly lower than weekdays in terms of open rate percentage and click-through rate percentage.

In a more recent study done by Campaign Monitor in 2020, key findings were put together to define global email marketing benchmarks.

Interestingly enough, Campaign Monitor came up with the key finding that Tuesdays see the highest open rates of all the days of the week.

At the same time, Tuesdays also resulted in the highest unsubscribe rates of any day.

The year-to-year comparison between 2019 and 2020, revealed that the average email marketing benchmarks remained relatively consistent overall for bounce rate, unsubscribe rate, CTR, CTOR (Click-To-Open Rate), and open rate.

**What Is The Best Time Of Day To Send A Marketing Email Campaign?**

The specific time of day to send a marketing email is inherently a little more tricky since you’ve got a few more variable to work with than just days of the week.

However, let’s dive into the hard data and hopefully gain some unique insights into when to send your next email to your list.

Here’s the results of a study done by Intercom:

The graph above shows distinctly that Tuesday at approximately 10am is the best time of day to send email marketing campaigns.

One thing that I also find interesting about this graph is that the timeframe in the morning between 10am to 11am consistently received the largest percentage of email messages opened every single day.

Another thing to note is that Thursday at around 10am came in a close second.

In a similar study done by GetResponse, the percentage of messages along with the open rate, click-through rate, and click-to-open rate were collected.

This study was done primarily to determine the best day to send marketing emails but shows once again that Tuesday is the best day to do it based upon the data.

One thing that’s not talked about often is email lifespan even though it in some ways is inherently linked to the time of day you send a message out.

GetResponse compiled their data once again and found that 23.8% of all opens occur within the first hour of delivery.

This means that if you don’t get the exact time of day right to send out your emails, then you could lose out on sales and obtaining customers.

According to Hubspot, the highest number of email opens occurs at 11am with 30,000 total emails opened.

Once again, we see that the morning hours are where the largest number of emails are being opened.

The final study to take a look at is one that was done by Omnisend.

The data shows that the highest average open rates occur at 8am, 1pm, and 4pm.

Additionally, the highest average click-through rate occurs at 8am, 1pm, 4pm, and 5pm.

What Are The Worst Days For Email Marketing?

One interesting data set to look at that was compiled by Campaign Monitor is the worst days for email marketing.

The data revealed that…

Worst day for email open rates – Saturday
Worst day for click-through rates – Wednesday and Saturday
Worst day for click-to-open rates – Sunday
Worst day for bounce rates – Friday and Saturday
Worst day for unsubscribe rates – Tuesday

When Should You Email Your Own Email List?

The best question you can ask is when you should email your own email list.

Based upon the data, on average the best time of day to send out marketing emails to your list:

Tuesday is the best day to send emails
10am is the best time to send emails

If we’re being honest, the best time time to send emails to your own list could vary greatly from this consensus.

There’s a reason why you always hear to split-test your headlines and always test things with your email list.

It’s because the number of variables make it certain that there’s no general time that can be thrown out to send emails and have it work for everyone’s individual email list.

It’s important to test sending out campaigns at different times and look at your reports.

Remember, the best data set is your own email list.

However, the email sequences are different in their use cases and how the story should be told over the course of several emails.

Let’s take a look now at what a Seinfeld sequence is to get up to speed on how to use it…

What Is A Seinfeld Email Sequence?

A Seinfeld email sequence is a set of stand-a-lone sequences that tell a story. The goal of any good Seinfeld sequence is to entertain the reader. In the end, they’re that much more likely to click on the call-to-action bringing you more sales.

There’s 3 main styles of seinfeld sequences:

A Soap Opera Sequence is something that any good email marketer should be using.

I’ll be walking through what it is, providing templates and examples, and share why it’s so important for email marketing.

What Is A Soap Opera Sequence?

A Soap Opera Sequence is typically a series of 5 emails that are sent out over the course of 5 days to an email subscriber initially upon subscribing. A SOAP sequence tells an emotional story similar to a tv soap opera but for emails with the purpose of warming up a lead to sell a product.

For my own soap opera email sequence, I have 5 emails with one email sent out each day and I tell my story of how I started an online business.

Autoresponder #2: AWeber

AWeber has a soft spot in my heart you could say.

It happens to be the first email autoresponder I ever used.

It’s also the most affiliate friendly autoresponder out there which is why so many affiliate marketers use it.

AWeber has a simplistic layout and gets the job done in terms of automatically sending out emails to your subscribers. The main reason why I switched away from AWeber though was that it had virtually no custom automation capabilities.

The ability to send out an email based upon a link being clicked or an if-else statement was simply non-existent. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons to get a better idea of what you can expect.

AWeber Pros:

Integrates with tons of software as a well-known autoresponder
Stock Photos database
Hundreds of ready-to-go email templates
Segmenting capabilities

AWeber Cons:

Sub-par analytics for open rates at link clicks
Sign up forms are poor
Virtually no automation capabilities

The big pull for AWeber, in my opinion, is that they allow affiliate links directly in emails.

However, their lack of automation capabilities makes them take second place on this list.

Autoresponder #3: ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign comes in at third on this list, but you might be surprised to hear that it’s actually the email autoresponder I’m currently using to run my business. Now, why is that?

First, ActiveCampaign is pickier in terms of affiliate marketing and doesn’t like affiliate links in emails.

Personally, I do affiliate marketing but always direct people to a bridge page first that contains my affiliate links.

Second, my main goal is to sell my own products and use affiliate marketing as a stepping stone to build income and get there quicker.

Out of all the autoresponders listed on this page or any other autoresponder for that matter, ActiveCampaign wins the battle for automation and segmentation capabilities.
